The Wake #1 Review

The Wake #1

Written by: Scott Snyder
Art by: Sean Murphy

The Sci-fi/horror epic written by Scott Snyder did far from disappoint. One of the most anticipated books this month, and just for the fact that it’s written by Scott Snyder, there were very big expectations. For a story that would grab us because of the secrets that lie within it, it certainly did.

The story did start off slow, but that was to establish who and what. Who the main characters are, and what is it that shapes the plot of this story. Lee Archer is a marine biologist, who comes off very charismatic while having a mysterious past. Good or bad is still unknown, but that is something we anticipate to be revealed along the way. This charismatic nature proves to be an issue for Lee as she is a mother and doesn’t seem to have the best relationship with her son because of it.

Now we get into the meat of the story when she is approached by the Department of Homeland Security for help with an unknown threat.  She declines being hesitant, of course given her mysterious past, but soon realizes no is not an option. It’s Snyder’s narrative that makes this story great because of it’s grim tone. He is able to make this exciting by throwing a likable character into a grim situation. And it’s Murphy who is able to bring this atmosphere to life with his tone of colors.

What we can expect from this book is something dark that will unravel. Something that will keep us at the edge of our seats and that’s what makes this such a great team up between Snyder and Murphy. Whatever is to come next remains unknown, but as a first issue this was on the mark.

Score: 9.5/10

Excelsior!

And stay tuned!
