This has been a rough two weeks for DC and it’s all because of poor choices and poor responses to them as well. Dodging bullets left and right and throwing the blame towards everything and everyone but themselves. It’s sad that they are going through this though they put it on themselves. As many will point out, the heat on DC got so bad that yesterday that the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, American Psychiatric Association, and National Alliance on Mental Illness all got together condemned DC for their actions.
With their backs against the wall, DC finally agreed as they issued a statement today:
“The purpose of the talent search was to allow new artists an opportunity to draw a single page of a 20-page story. True to the nature of the character, the entire story is cartoony and over-the-top in tone, as Harley Quinn breaks the 4th Wall and satirizes the very scenes she appears in. DC Entertainment sincerely apologizes to anyone who may have found the page synopsis offensive and for not clearly providing the entire context of the scene within the full scope of the story.”
It is about time they did this, but the damage has already been done. For Jim Lee to even step out on Twitter and tell fans they’re wrong for being offended is the wrong way to handle this situation. It doesn’t matter if the tone and intention of the script was misinterpreted or not, it is their fault and the fans reacted to it as any normal person would who takes such things as suicide seriously. Using the page on a very public stage with no context and assuming everyone will just get it is just narrow-minded. This is something the whole world sees, enters in, and not all of them have the same frame of reference to understand what they were possibly trying to portray.
