Comic Based TV Series To Anticipate So Far(Updated)

The Defenders

This year alone we’ve had so many publishers announcing that they are bringing their titles to your living room. So far 13 have been announced and there is a reason to be excited for all of them be it a Marvel, DC, Vertigo, or Image fan. They will not all come out at the same time and will either be connected to other shows or movies, it’s a great time to be a comic fan indeed. This is storytelling brought to life and what better way to show the world why we love these heroes?

Barry Allen will next be running back to live-action, on the CW, even more shocking to be introduced to the same universe as the ongoing Arrow. It is said that this may occur after a spin-off from Arrow, with Flash appearing in a late episode during Season 2 and branching off to his own series.

Commissioner Gordon0

Taking another another step in TV, first Arrow, Flash, now DC’s Commissioner Gordon getting his own live-action series. Following a bidding war, the Warner Bros. TV-produced series, called Gotham, has ended up at FOX. The series will focus on a young Detective James Gordon and “the villains that made Gotham famous.” Bruno Heller (Rome, The Mentalist) is writing the Commissioner Gordon. This series is expected to launch during the 2014-2015 TV season.

League of Extraordinary Gnetlemen crop

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

Fox have given a pilot commitment to a small screen adaptation of Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill’s League of Extraordinary Gentleman. Michael Green (whose credits include the likes of Green Lantern, Smallville and Heroes) is set to write and executive produce, while The Matrix‘s Erwin Stoff will also serve in the latter capacity.

Tony Chu is a detective with a secret. A weird secret. Tony Chu is Cibopathic, which means he gets psychic impressions from whatever he eats. It also means he’s a hell of a detective, as long as he doesn’t mind nibbling on the corpse of a murder victim to figure out whodunit, and why. He’s been brought on by the Special Crimes Division of the FDA, the most powerful law enforcement agency on the planet, to investigate their strangest, sickest, and most bizarre cases.

NBC has made a script commitment for a new series based on the comic book, to be written by David S. Goyer. Liar, cheater, manipulator… John Constantine is all of these, and yet he uses these skills and more to protect the world from the darkest corners of the DC Universe. If you’re one of the uninitiated and you don’t dabble in the dark arts, you probably don’t have much to fear from Constantine. He’s not interested in tormenting the blissfully unaware or those who he deems not up to par with his intelligence. But if you’ve decided to swim in his waters, then all bets are off. He’ll show you no mercy.

Lawyer by day, Hell’s Kitchen’s hero of the night. Matt Murdock is blinded by a radioactive substance that falls from an oncoming vehicle. While he no longer can see, the radioactive exposure heightens his remaining senses beyond normal human ability. The one hero fans have been wanting to see given a second chance on screen and that is happening now.

Luke Cage

Street smart, born leader, and smooth talker, Luke Cage is one bad ass who obtained his powers in an accident that left him with near-impervious skin and superhuman strength. He’s not the hero to mess with, taking both morality and respect very seriously you don’t want to get on his bad side. He is as street-level as you can get and someone you can always appreciate because of his presence.

Iron Fist

Hero and master of martial arts, is there anymore that is needed to be said? Hero For Hire, and former partner to Luke Cage, Iron Fist is the full package to fans who just want to see a good ass kicking. Plunging his fists into the molten heart of the dragon Shou-Lao the Undying infused the dragon’s superhuman energy into Rand. This along with training by Lei Kung the Thunderer gave Rand the power of the Iron Fist, allowing him to summon and focus his chi and enhance his natural abilities to extraordinary levels.

Jessica Jones

Jessica Jones debuted in the series Alias as an embittered former superheroine who had used the aliases Jewel, though currently Power Woman. After hanging up her costume, she became the owner and sole employee of Alias Private Investigations. Now she is retired as a mother. If you really don’t know her, all you need to know is that she is the current wife of Luke Cage.

As a result of the chemical spill, Jessica Jones possesses superhuman strength and resistance to injury and the ability to fly at sub-sonic speeds.

The Defenders

A dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters. Lead up mini series from Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones.

A supernatural crime story that centers around a med student-turned-zombie who takes a job in the coroner’s office to gain access to the brains she must reluctantly eat to maintain her humanity. But with each brain she consumes, she inherits the corpse’s memories, and with the help of her medical examiner boss and a police detective, she solves homicide cases in order to quiet the disturbing voices in her head.

The latest DC Comics superhero to get the small-screen treatment will be Hourman on The CW. A drama centered around Hourman, aka Rex Tyler, “a brilliant-yet-troubled pharmaceutical analyst who discovers that the visions that have plagued him since childhood are actually glimpses of tragic events occurring one hour in the future. Determined to win back his ex-wife and son, he heroically prevents these tragedies from unfolding, finding both purpose and redemption along the way.”

AMC is looking for that next big hit, and they’re betting that show will be Preacher. This Vertigo comic by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon is about Jesse Custer, a small town preacher who is torn by booze and sin and who finds himself the vessel for a strange entity – the child of a mating between an angel and a demon. Filled with immense power, including The Word of God, which makes anyone do whatever he says, Jesse goes hunting for the Lord Almighty, who has abandoned creation. He aims to make him pay for leaving his children behind. Joining Jesse on his journey is his ex-girlfriend Tulip, who is now a hit woman, and a hundred year old Irish vampire named Cassidy. Along the way they battle secret religious commandos, the retarded descendent of Christ, a guy who fucks meat and even each other.
