Pushing For More Legacy Heroes

We’re now at that point where legacy heroes can be a target of creation when the iconic heroes start nearing the end of their journey. A legacy hero is a type of character that has some connection to the previously existing hero who either inherits or adopts the name and attributes of the original.

Batman, Superman, Wolverine, Flash, Green Lantern, Captain Marvel and many more are examples of this. Having such characters as Superboy, Supergirl, Robin, Kid Flash, X-23 to follow in their footsteps. The best example of one that everyone knows is Luke Skywalker, who can be considered a Legacy hero because he becoame a Jedi like his father once was.

The point is that everyone asks for new heroes, and usually they only want to see originally created characters. It’s not always easy to create a successful hero, one that is appealing and given a chance. It takes an effort from both the creators and the readers to make that character into someone memorable in that Universe. But with that said, it doesn’t mean that we have to discontinue those who are iconic and well-known. Whether readers like it or not, it doesn’t work that way unless there is absolutely nothing to do with that hero and even then if the name of that character is enough to sell books, why would you give that up?

If that hero has to go, then you find a new way to approach that hero. You give them a legacy to take up the name and remind fans of what made that hero so great. There’s nothing wrong with that because if you respect that hero, you should be able to open yourself up to a new way to experience what he or she was able to instill in those who look up to them. Captain Marvel now has that kind of following, if anything this is what her book has built her reputation up to be. This is one of the first female heroes to be getting her own legacy. This new Ms. Marvel will be her legacy and someone who will try to fill her shoes as a girl who is proud of what that title stood for.

Calling any of this a PR stunt just shows once again that readers can’t handle change. It’s never just about catering to you personally, it’s about expansion and doing something which adds some importance to that hero who you hold so highly in regard. We should be able to take the time and think of heroes we haven’t seen much of and set them up side by side with those who are most Dr. Strange with a Native American teen, Josiah X and Patriot, Captain America and Chavez America, Miles and Peter or Otto, you name it and anything is possible at this point. I would love nothing more than to see Cyclops have his own legacy. It’s hard to imagine right now, but with the path he has taken, there has to at least be one person to show the same drive as him for the goals he has set for the mutant population.

Who do you think should be the next legacy character? And which character should be a mentor?
