***Minor Spoiler Review***
What’s up everyone! Welcome to Beyond The Panel. Coming at you today with talk about Gleipnir! Last week’s episode dropped a bomb on everyone’s laps as the realization hit that moving forward comes with a feeling of knowing that what you did was only the prelude to what more you will have to do to achieve your goals. Now with the title of this episode, it seems that the intention was for us to get to know how some others have gotten to where they are now. If that twist at the end was any indication, this was our time to understand some of the more central characters to this coin collection.
This week’s episode wasn’t one which progressed the story, but it was one which created a strong sense of depth and reasoning for everything that is unfolding. Mainly when it comes to what Elena and her group has been planning. Since that moment where Elena came clean about where she stands on this coin collection, so many questions were now raised about her endgame. What was it that she wanted to get out of this? Who are some of these other people she is working with? What makes her work so crucial that even she would be concerned about the necessity in finding success? This episode right here was the episode we needed to take forward in order to begin understanding what’s going on, because the only way to do so is to go back to the time where it all started. That meant going back to the days where this group of friends in that picture we saw last week, were still together. Much of what we saw was unexpected, and mainly for the fact that someone like Shuichi was so embedded in their story.
Taking a trip through their past was an enlightening experience because everything quickly began falling into place. What we learned about Honoka last week was the catalyst to everything that was set in motion. Up to this point we all questioned what could go wrong when the wrong person has this power in their hands. You think of something terrifying and scary, but you do not prepare for the things that can be unseen. The things you do not notice because the wishes you’re granted can be virtually anything. With that said, I also found myself quickly fooled by what I once assumed about what we learned last week. For me, it was easy to come to the conclusion that Honoka cared enough about the alien’s story that she brought her friends along to search for the coins. While that was not the case, I’m glad it was not as well. With a story like this, the last thing you want is for things to play out predictably. It made more sense that there might be more to this than what was on the surface.
The biggest takeaway from this episode was coming to understand what danger everyone faces from this one person who has already managed to collect one-hundred coins. This guy right here? That was what you had to fear from someone who not only was granted a terrifying power, but has collected enough coins to do something worse than what he has already done for himself and to others.
By the end of the episode, I also appreciated that we were seeing some steps taken towards someone else taking the gaps in Shuichi’s memories more seriously. There’s only so many times where you can hear things which don’t match with what you know. Someone had to be that brave soul to actually backtrack to some of those things said, and begin to put two and two together. While this week’s discovery did not answer any questions about those gaps, it is at least a given that what’s going on is something that was done to Shuichi. Pretty much confirming what no one was ready to admit about Elena’s confession.
Overall, I can’t say I was prepared for the answer we got to what happened to that group of friends. You forget for a second that this is not a happy story, and just like that an episode like this reminds you that this is not leading up to a place where there is some light at the end of the tunnel. Not when the greatest enemy that Shuichi, Clair, or Elena and her group will have to face, is an old friend.
