What’s up everyone! Welcome to Beyond The Panel. Coming at you today with talk about Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 08 “Boredom”! After last week’s episode, big wheels have begun turning in this story. Last week mostly dealt with Gojo running into the special-grade souls who want him out of the way, and a statement was made that he is an obstacle as they are ready to make their move.It really made you wonder what comes next with that bit of information now known.
Though before getting into that, this week’s episode mainly focused on what came next for Fushiguro and Kugisaki as the Exchange Event slowly approached. Now what caught me off guard was seeing that they wouldn’t jump right into some training montage for the two of them catching up to the third-years. Though I suppose that would have been too straightforward. It was more interesting that they would take the time to introduce a few of the other students who they would run into when the event came. Toudou and Maki were two characters I didn’t expect to enjoy, and yet somehow did as they couldn’t help harassing the competition.
If there’s one thing you have to give credit to for Jujutsu Kaisen, it is that this is a colorful cast of characters. Toudou off the bat was as ridiculous as they come. I mean, you just never expect the initial conversation to have with a character like him be about the preference of women. And you never expect the kind of answer he gave, or the response from the answer which Fushiguro gave him.
This led to a pretty intense match between the four, and I was thrilled that the animation once more had you glued to the screen from start to finish. Particularly when it came to Toudou’s display of power. It was cool that they would introduce us to another jujutsu sorcerer with a unique ability. At the same time I admired that they would take things a step further to explain what made another sorcerer just as unique for her inability to use cursed energy.
One thing I have continued to appreciate since last week is the understanding of Gojo and his perspective of the world. Normally when you have a character like him, they are very reserved and by the book. Though when it comes to Gojo, they danced around the rules. This I love for the fact that it makes you wonder what you should expect from someone who has zero respect for the way that things work. Especially when it comes to the higher ups in the world of jujutsu sorcery. I gotta admit, I was never really expecting Gojo to be the kind of character who is vocal about his disdain for the way that things are run. And yet there he is telling them that their time is up and he may not even be the one who puts the nail in their coffin.
Beyond this, by the end of the episode there was a quickening to the pacing of the progress this story was taking. This I felt should be recognized because they could have easily kept this to a crawl. Though I feel like it was smarter to keep doing as they have done since the first episode, and that is keeping to the point of everything unfolding.
Overall, another excitable episode of Jujutsu Kaisen. Episode 08 gave us new characters, deeper motivations, and continued setting the stage for big things to come.
