Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 09 “Small Fry and Reverse Retribution” Review

What’s up everyone! Welcome to Beyond The Panel. Coming at you today with talk about Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 09 “Small Fry and Reverse Retribution”! Credit where it is due that the creative team for this series knows how to keep you at the edge of your seat for what comes next. A simple harassing from another school turns into a brutal battle. So this week the same thing you expect from Itadori and Nanami as they tackle a new case.

Though before that, there was the “incident” in the theater to catch-up with. They certainly had my attention because this was the first time where we were seeing a scene left by an enemy where you could witness the aftermath of the supernatural terror they created. Burning a restaurant full of people is fine, but at the end of the day you could easily call that a freak accident. This was blatant and grotesque. I didn’t mind that they showed us that murder in the act, and appreciated the time they took to show us what happened leading up to it.

It was bold that from this they would also create a situation where we could see what happens when someone witnesses this evil, and decides they want to be a part of it. Now the opportunity was presented to explored the world of evil jujutsu sorcerers. This part interests me since this as well goes hand in hand when it comes to talk of the landscape changing in this world as a whole.

This brings us to the appeal of them taking us back to Itadori and his training. Last week was a solid break from his story, though I hope I speak for most when I say that it is a point of interest to see how this kid improves. In just that short amount of time training with Gojou, there was a number of ways in which his powers grew. Through some action, and even a different application of his powers, we got a good understanding of the kind of sorcerer he would become in contrast to everyone else. I mean obviously they were going to go for the kind of character who generally has explosive power, so to that extent I wasn’t too shocked. Though in this world that is still something unique.

That said, our introduction to Kento Nanami was pretty cool. In the eight episodes which aired before, there hasn’t been that many adults we have run into who stand out aside from Gojou. It was about time that we could be introduced to someone who was neither a student or a teacher. This was someone who had experience in being a jujutsu sorcerer, and proved hat through the way he interacted with Itadori. It was also refreshing to see someone who was more, yet at the same time able to give Gojou a run for his money being both blunt and straightforward.

As for Nanami’s powers? That was definitely quite the reveal. You wouldn’t have expected too much from him just by looking at him, but his power was nothing to overlook.

In the end, I enjoyed their mission in looking for the kid who witnessed the theater murder. There’s plenty of ways that things could go wrong here, yet also create more depth in understanding that these jujutsu sorcerers need to fully understand what they are dealing with.

All in all, Jujutsu Kaisen “Small Fry and Reverse Retribution” was a great change of pace from what has unfolded up to this point. What seems small right now gives you the impression that it is going to become much bigger in time. Maybe even next week depending on how Itadori handles himself finding that line in the sand between a sorcerer who assesses the situation, and one who jumps in without hesitation.
