What’s up everyone! Welcome to Beyond The Panel. Coming at you today with talk about Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 12 “To You Someday”! Just wow. I didn’t think that by the end of this week’s episode I would find myself saying that this should be a series where you expect the unexpected. I honestly thought I knew what I was in store for, and then so quickly came to understand that I knew nothing of what I have invested in.
As always that is the best feeling with a series like this, because this is one of those stories where the most sick and twisted things can hit you when you’re guard is down. Let’s take the first portion of this episode for example. Of course what would come next is a confrontation between Itadori and Yoshino. However, what you did not expect was the kind of action you would get out of the two clashing, or how their battle would come to a close. So much intensity, and yet at the same time so much heart poured into this scene. There was something to love from the perspective of both sides. Especially Itadori who is clearly still learning on the move. Not only growing as a jujutsu sorcerer, but as a person too.
You just wouldn’t have thought that he would also experience one of his darkest moments in the process of that growth. I’ll admit, and even then I might be wrong, that I thought Yoshino had a future in this story. I did not prepare myself for the idea that maybe this was not going to be the case. Nor did I brace myself for the side of Itadori we would see when faced with a vile act of inhumanity done right in front of him. This series is dark, but even for where we are in the story now, it was easy to forget just how horrific this might get.
There was one thing which also struck deep, and that was the understanding of these curses. They all may seems different on the surface, but they are also all the same when it comes to what entertains them. It was truly heartbreaking to see Itadori come to terms with this the hard way. At this point you can tell that he is the kind of character who has to experience something to get it.
Now where this episode truly grabbed me was the battle which came next between Itadori and Masato. Even this was unexpected in many ways for what was so very contrasting to when Masato faced Nanami. Firstly, this was a crucial moment for us getting to know what Itadori offers in the field of battle. I remember when I was initially not feeling the idea of him being another main character who specializes in just having explosive reserves of energy. Though all it really took was seeing Itadori in a real fight for his life against someone who knew how to push him to his newfound limits. The animation was beautiful for the choreography that went into the physicality of two people who really knew how to punish the other.
Overall, Jujutsu Kaisen episode 12 “To You Someday” was a whirlwind of emotions. I know there’s some manga readers out there now saying that we probably haven’t seen the worst either.
