***Minor Spoiler Review***
What’s up everyone! Welcome to Beyond The Panel. Coming at you today with talk about Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World “Nobody Can Lift a Quain Stone Alone”! If you told me that Subaru’s plan was going to create all of these new opportunities neither he or us had before, I would not have believed you. Yet now we know Otto better than we ever have, and this week we had the same opportunity to get to see Garfiel in a new light.
I gotta say, this was easily another one of my favorite episodes from this series. I know we all love those episodes where Subaru has everything figured out and sets a plan into motion, but that isn’t everything to look forward to. What we also look forward to are the moments where these characters take the opportunity to grow. At this point it is safe to say that there isn’t a single character from this cast who doesn’t have something about themself to fix. In the case of Subaru? This was his moment to finally step up to the plate and actually have the nerve to back-up his words. Though before we talk about his actions, let’s talk about his words. This time around it wasn’t just a brave front he was putting on. I enjoyed this side of him who knew exactly what to say to someone, no matter how blunt the truth was, and not come off as a fraud. Subaru was finally speaking from a place where he knew himself enough to criticize someone else.
Now when Garfiel made his entrance, I think we all probably assumed that this was the end of the road for Subaru. Up to this point he has offered nothing that would suggest that he could take on someone as powerful as Garfiel. Even with Emilia by his side, there just was no telling how he himself was going to fair if things got violent. Yet somehow things did not at all play out as you would have expected. It was thrilling to know that this is the point where Subaru might be able to start defending himself.
Which brings us to Garfiel himself, the images alone told you enough that this was going to be another episode where we got to experience some deep character exploration. Like Otto last week, Garfiel got the same treatment and did not fail to stir some feelings throughout the story told. It was certainly liberating to at last see what really happened to his family, and see how from his perspective such events could fuel the attitude he now carries in the present. They did not hold back here and that made the moment of revelation so impactful. For someone like Garfiel you don’t mince words. You jump in and assault him with the truth.
The icing on the cake was also seeing a different side to both Emilia and Ram too. These two as well have finally gotten to a place where they themselves can speak truth to someone without leaving you with the feeling that they were being hypocrites. The fruits of Emilia’s confrontation with Subaru were laid bare and she was able to speak with confidence for once. Not only that, she showed this through her willingness to stand between Garfiel and Subaru. As for Ram, it mattered seeing a side of her that actually cared for someone outside of Roswaal. This didn’t mean that she was suddenly a saint, but she was close enough to sincere that someone could genuinely find comfort in her words.
Overall, Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World “Nobody Can Lift a Quain Stone Alone” was a powerful episode which might leave you with the need to see it twice.
