What’s up everyone! Welcome to Beyond The Panel. Coming at you today with talk about Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 20 “Nonstandard”! Definitely one of the more obscure titles for these episodes compared to the other episodes previous, yet still there was a lot to look forward to this week.
Simply amazing. That was all I could say to myself after this episode. Clearly from the previews to this one, they were going to finally show us what makes Todo so formidable in battle. There were some things you probably found yourself assuming, if you were an anime viewer. You probably assumed that for the most part his ace in the hole was his brawn, and you probably assumed that this special ability of his had something to do with teleportation. Though the answer turned out so much better than that. Through Todo taking charge of the battle, we got to witness two techniques which backed up how powerful everyone says he is. It was one thing to have this assumed IQ of 530,000. Though it was another thing entirely to see that cleverness in action. It did not disappoint one bit, and I was even thankful that they didn’t spend too much unnecessary time talking us through his thought process.
That said, don’t even get me started on the other technique either. So far this had to be one of the most exciting techniques revealed to us. It may not have been the most flashy, but it was the most convenient technique that can really turn a rough situation in your favor. Not to mention this does a hell of a lot to make the choreography of a fight spectacular.
And what continued to make this so exhilarating was the continued dynamic between Itadori and Todo at the same time. Even when told that all he had to do was believe in Todo and follow his lead, nothing changed about their intensity and success as a tag team. In fact, this created the perfect opportunity to keep up that consistency in allowing Itadori to grow through this experience. I for one did not expect that this would all benefit his development so much in the longrun.
Aside from this, I didn’t mind seeing what the old man could do too. No to say that there was too much to actually see, but it was still appreciated that a character like him would really possess that kind of power.
The best thing about this episode was getting to a point where we could also see just why it is that these guys fear Gojo. Obviously this is because of what the guy is capable of, but even then it was hard to imagine that two or maybe even three of them would be that terrified of someone who they say they are above as cursed spirits. This whole thing could have gone many ways, yet all it took was Gojo to drastically shift the direction of this situation. He was brutal, he was precise, and it didn’t hurt that he simply had fun with the role he had to play in this.
Now some might say that in the end things wrapped up fairly abruptly. They could be right. however, I felt that they made the right decision given what has happened up to this point. This started with plans for an assassination, and ended with the introduction of the big bads to everyone.
Overall, Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 20 “Nonstandard” somehow managed to outdo last week’s episode, and that I thought would take much more effort.
